Metabolic syndrome understood

A cascade of problems in the body...

METABOLIC SYNDROME is a 'situation' in the body where the sum of  imbalances equals an overall effect of weight gain, body fat increase, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, low energy and libido leading to coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

Typically 5 factors are measured to give us a sense of the 'situation'
1. Blood pressure
2. HDL & LDL
3. Waist girth
4. Triglycerides
5. Blood sugar

What causes metabolic syndrome?
Generally the body's inability or reduced capacity to handle blood sugar is behind the 'situation'.
Normally food is absorbed into the bloodstream as sugar (glucose) and other basic substances.  When glucose levels in the bloodstream rise an organ called the pancreas releases a hormone called insulin.  It then attaches to the body's cells allowing glucose to enter and is then used for energy.  In the 'situation' where the body's cells cannot respond to insulin this is called Insulin resistance.

Treatment?
Various forms of dieting, exercising, medication, surgery, education on lifestyles and counseling exist to help those who fit the criteria for the 'situation'.  Often it is met with failure because the task can be daunting depending on how long it has existed and how far the situation has come. Certainly "change" is difficult especially when your mind tells you it will take a long time or if you fail people will judge you.

stay tuned...
